Aim well, watch your momentum

One shooter, built around the mechanic most browser shooters remove: real momentum. Your ship keeps whatever velocity you gave it, so aiming and moving are the same decision.

What space shooter actually asks of you

Asteroid Belt is a shooter in the original sense — the threat is the rock you are about to drift into, not the number of enemies on screen. There is no friction, no auto-brake and no drift assist. A thrust you applied to dodge one rock is still carrying you when the next appears, which means the interesting question is never where to shoot but where you will be when you have finished shooting.

Large rocks split when hit, so clearing a screen makes it briefly more dangerous rather than less. That is the tension the whole game runs on: a shot that solves the immediate problem creates two smaller, faster problems in the same place. Experienced play involves shooting the outer edge of a cluster and letting the debris travel away from you rather than through you.

The practical technique is to spend as few burns as possible and to plan them in pairs — one to move, one to cancel. Players who treat the thrust as a steering wheel run out of screen; players who treat it as a budget survive long enough for the field to thin out.
